Events worth celebrating

Bill Ard and his teammates are celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the New York Giants first Super Bowl Championship.

In the aftermath of this historic victory Bill and Martha Ard were busy raising their four young children in suburban New Jersey when they participated in the Fresh Air Fund. This program gives "city" kids a chance for a summer vacation, and little 7 year-old Sam from the Bronx moved into the Ard household for two weeks. But after returning home, Sam's living situation took a turn for the worse. The Ards decided to rescue him and welcomed him back into their family on a permanent basis.

Therefore this year will be also remembered for something else too. It is the year Sam graduated from the United States Marine Corps, and assumed a position not unlike Bill's 25 years ago. As a member of the famous "Surbanites," Bill's job as an offensive lineman was to protect the quarterback and running backs. He was so good that singer/songwriter Bob Dylan later called him the "Ultimate Protector." It seems little Sam was paying attention. It is his turn now.
