Interview with Johnny Holland

Chris Godfrey: Why do you actively oppose Abortion?
Johnny Holland: Well, I think that God gives special blessings for someone to have a kid and I think that you don't own a kid's life and when God gives life no one should take it away. Therefore I oppose it.

Chris: When did you first come to this position?
Johnny: Well when I became a Christian back in 1987. I see that God had blessed many people's lives and has a special purpose for people's lives and therefore I came to the conclusion that God gives life and no one should take it away.

Chris: Is there any scripture that comes to mind that influenced your decision?
Johnny: No scripture. Actually my views reflect my overall spiritual growth. Life is very precious and special.

Chris: Is there any person in particular that helped influence that view?
Johnny: My wife and I came to that conclusion together when we were trying to have a child of our own. We also saw others who really wanted to have children. We knew that it wasn't right for others to have abortions.

Chris: What Pro-Life activities do you find the most effective or meaningful?
Johnny: Well, I think professional athletes are very effective when they stand up for the cause. I think we have a platform where people have a tendency to listen, especially young kids who are in situations where they have to make decisions. I think that professional athletes have a big influence. I also think participating in marches benefits what is right.

Chris: You mean the one in Washington each year?
Johnny: Yes, I think the one (March For Life)in Washington each year is a good cause.

Chris: Do you have a message for young people?
Johnny: Well, in the case of a young girl and guy making a decision on abortion I would definitely encourage them not to do it because down the road I think they'll think about it; their whole life and its someone that you can't bring back. I'd encourage them to put it in the hands of God and everything will work out the way He wants it.

Chris: Do you have a message for other athletes?
Johnny: I just encourage other athletes to take a look at it. Everyone has their own opinions, but you can't go with what the world thinks. You've got to do what's right. I think athletes need to start doing what's right because there are a lot of people watching and following their lead. I think athletes have a big influence on decisions.

Chris: Do you have a message for those that have been involved in an abortion already?
Johnny: If you've been involved in it, I think you have to put it behind you. Learn from your mistakes. Try to help others so that they might avoid the mistakes you have made.
