Scooter McGruder
New England Patriots, NFL
As a kid, he got his nickname because he ran everywhere. When he was
older, Scooter chased down fast backs when he played at Kent State
University. Today, Scooter McGruder chases the best running backs in the
world.
Scooter, a free agent, believes coming to the New England Patriots was
providential. For the team, it was a boon, since Scooter, a defensive
back, is now the team leader in interceptions. And for Scooter, nothing
can beat playing for the Patriots in his 1st Super Bowl!
He is happy with the '96 season, even the defeat at the hands of the
Packers. "This year we built character and achieved stability and grew as
a team. We are a young team," he says. "And what is more important is
that we've built up our faith. It is time for confessing Christians to
stand up. Everyone else in the world stands up. Why can't we?"
Fans across America saw Reggie White lead the Green Bay Packers in prayer
after the Super Bowl victory. Scooter says this trend is sweeping the
NFL, with good results. It is becoming the norm for Christian team
members to pray after games and talk about Jesus Christ, he says. These
grown men are role models anyway because of their talents, but now many
are striving openly to be good examples.
The wave of commitment cascading through the NFL has a lot in common with
Life Athletes. Scooter says enthusiastically, "Life Athletes is great."
And here, for his fellow Life Athletes, are Scooter's hints on making the
most out of life:
"Youth is the decision making time. Life is made of choices. There are
four or five major decisions you make in life. The first four are about
character. If you make good decisions here, your life will be happy.
- Associations. Who you hang around with can make you better, or it
can push you towards doing wrong.
- Education. The books you read will influence the way you live.
(Scooter's favorite? The B.I.B.L.E. It stands for "Basic Instructions
Before Leaving Earth".)
- Drugs. Abstain from them. Give your life a chance.
- Sex Before Marriage. With sex, you become one with a person. And
you will have memories forever.
- Accepting Jesus Christ into your life.
