Good character is the rule, not the exception, in Dallas. Nearly every player joins in prayer before every game, says Jim Schwantz, and kneels for the Lord's Prayer after games. Last year, however, the Cowboys gained notoriety because of a few players. In '97, the team will battle opponents on the field, and the bad reputation that will carry over from '96.

Point 1 of the Life Athletes' Commitment, says Jim, is the perfect rallying cry for the Dallas Cowboys. Try hard, and begin again when you make mistakes, even bad ones. Will the Cowboys be able to re-earn their good name? Read a little about this rising star, Jim Schwantz, and you decide:

Jim is a young player with a golden future ahead of him. This 1992 graduate of Purdue University played linebacker for the Boilermakers. After practicing with the Bears in his hometown of Chicago, and came to Dallas in 1993, and played on the Super Bowl XXX team (vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers). He has known the excitement of the Pro Bowl, where he logged three tackles on special teams. About the Pro Bowl, he says, "It was like my first day of practice at Dallas or Purdue!" In five years, Jim has been to the top, but fame has not turned his head.

Jim is a motivational speaker who carries a strong anti-drug message to young people. Jim believes that decisions affect you even long after you make them. One night of partying with drugs can turn into a habit and destroy you five years down the road, he says. What is the key to making good decisions? "Condition yourself. Practice making good choices. Most of all, surround yourself with good people. Bad people can put you into hard situations. It's less awkward to turn down a beer if you are with good friends."

Jim practices what he preaches and surrounds himself with the best people! The team chaplain, John Weber, in an inspiration to Jim. Jim participates in weekly Bible study with his other teammates. Camaraderie, support, and most of all, good people: these are the ingredients of Jim's social life.

Jim is a young leader with a way of building good habits and influencing others for the good. Would it surprise you if, before long, the Dallas Cowboys become the pride of the NFL?
